Pigmentation and melasma treatment in New Cairo

Dark patches, sun spots and marks left behind by acne can make skin look tired and uneven, and they rarely fade on their own. At NeoDerma Clinic in the Fifth Settlement, pigmentation treatment starts with a diagnosis, because each type of pigment behaves differently and the wrong treatment can make it darker.

Why diagnosis comes first

"Pigmentation" is not one condition. The most common types we see are:

  • Melasma. Symmetrical brown or grey-brown patches, usually on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip or jawline. It is driven by sun, visible light, heat and hormones (pregnancy, birth control pills), and it often runs in families. It is common in Egypt and in medium to darker skin tones.
  • Sun spots (solar lentigines). Flat brown spots on areas that see the most sun, such as the face, hands and shoulders.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Dark marks left after acne, picking, a rash, a burn or an irritating product or procedure.
  • Pigment from irritation or friction, for example around the mouth, underarms or inner thighs.

Melasma in particular is easily provoked. Aggressive lasers, strong scrubs or poorly timed peels can inflame it and leave it darker than before. That is why every plan at NeoDerma is built after a skin assessment, and why melasma-prone and reactive skin is treated conservatively.

Treatment options at NeoDerma

Your plan may combine more than one of these, depending on the type and depth of pigment, your skin type and how much downtime you can have.

Depigmentation peel systems: Cosmelan, Dermamelan, Meladeep and Cimel

These are professional depigmentation systems designed for stubborn pigment and melasma. Typically, a mask is applied in clinic and left on the skin for a set number of hours, then you continue with a home maintenance cream. Expect a few days of redness and peeling while the skin renews. The doctor chooses the system and protocol that suits your skin.

Lutronic Spectra laser toning

The Lutronic Spectra is a Q-switched laser. At gentle "toning" settings, it breaks up excess pigment with very little heat, which makes it a careful choice for selected pigmentation and some melasma cases. Toning usually needs a series of short sessions spaced a few weeks apart, with minimal downtime. Spectra is also used for carbon laser sessions that brighten the skin and refine pores.

Chemical peels

Medical peels at different strengths can lift surface pigment, even out tone and support other treatments. See our Chemical peels page for details.

Medical skincare and sun protection

Home care is not optional with pigmentation. Your plan will include a daily routine with pigment-reducing ingredients chosen for your skin, and a sunscreen strategy that protects against UV and visible light. In Cairo's strong sun, this is what keeps results from fading.

What to expect

  1. Assessment. Your skin is examined, your history is reviewed (sun exposure, pregnancy, hormones, medicines, previous treatments and what made pigment worse), and the type of pigmentation is identified.
  2. Your plan. You get a written plan: which treatments, in what order, how many sessions, expected downtime and the home routine.
  3. Treatment. Sessions follow the plan, with your skin checked at each visit so settings can be adjusted.
  4. Maintenance. Once pigment has improved, a maintenance routine and periodic check-ups help keep it under control.

Improvement is gradual. Many people see a visible change over several weeks, and stubborn melasma usually takes longer and needs ongoing care.

Living with melasma

Melasma is usually managed rather than permanently cured. It can return with sun, heat or hormonal changes, even after excellent results. The aim is to lighten it as far as safely possible, and then keep it calm with:

  • Broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, reapplied when outdoors. Tinted sunscreens with iron oxides also help block visible light.
  • Hats, shade and avoiding peak sun hours.
  • Avoiding heat and steam where you can, such as saunas and hot yoga.
  • Not picking, scrubbing or using harsh products.
  • A maintenance routine and regular follow-up.

Frequently asked questions

Can melasma be cured?

Melasma is usually managed rather than cured. Treatment can lighten it significantly, and maintenance with sun protection keeps it under control.

What is the best treatment for melasma?

There is no single best treatment. Depending on your skin, the plan may include a depigmentation system such as Cosmelan or Dermamelan, gentle laser toning, peels and medical skincare. The doctor chooses after assessment.

Can laser make pigmentation worse?

Yes, if the settings or timing are wrong. That is why pigmentation-prone skin is assessed first and lasers are used conservatively.

What causes dark spots after acne?

Post-inflammatory pigmentation can follow acne, picking, irritation or sun exposure. It often responds well to peels, laser toning and medical skincare once acne is controlled.

How long does Cosmelan take to work?

Most people see the skin begin to lighten within the first weeks, with continued improvement while using the home cream. Your doctor will explain the timeline for your skin.

Is there downtime?

It depends on the treatment. Laser toning has very little. Depigmentation masks and stronger peels can cause a few days of redness and peeling.

Can I treat pigmentation during pregnancy?

Many pigment treatments are postponed during pregnancy and breastfeeding. A safe skincare and sun protection routine can still help. Discuss it with the doctor.
