Candela vs diode laser: which is better for hair removal?

"Is it Candela or diode?" is one of the first questions people ask before booking laser hair removal in Egypt. The honest answer is that neither is better for everyone. The right laser depends on your skin tone and your hair, and on how the laser is used. This guide explains the difference in plain language so you can ask the right questions at any clinic.

First: "Candela" is a brand, "diode" is a type

Candela is a company that makes medical lasers. When people in Egypt say "Candela laser", they usually mean the Candela GentleLase, an Alexandrite laser with a wavelength of 755 nm.

Diode is a type of laser, made by many companies, usually working at around 800 to 810 nm. Some newer diode machines combine several wavelengths in one handpiece.

So the real comparison is Alexandrite (755 nm) vs diode (about 810 nm). There is also a third common type, Nd:YAG (1064 nm), which matters a lot for darker skin.

How wavelength changes the result

Laser hair removal works because hair pigment (melanin) absorbs laser light and turns it into heat that damages the follicle. But the skin also contains melanin, and the laser has to target the hair without overheating the skin.

  • Alexandrite (755 nm) is absorbed very strongly by melanin. That makes it very effective on dark hair and also on finer or lighter-brown hair. Because skin melanin also absorbs it, it is usually best for light to medium skin.
  • Diode (about 810 nm) is absorbed a little less by melanin and reaches slightly deeper. It is usually a balanced option for a wider range of skin tones, including many medium and olive skin types.
  • Nd:YAG (1064 nm) is absorbed least by skin melanin and reaches deepest. It is usually the safest choice for brown and dark skin, but it is less effective on fine and light hair.

These are general patterns. The individual machine, settings, cooling and the experience of the person using it matter as much as the laser type.

Which one is right for you?

If you have light to medium skin and dark or medium-brown hair: Alexandrite is usually an excellent choice, and many people see good reduction on fine hair too. Diode also works well.

If you have olive or medium-brown skin: a diode or a carefully set Alexandrite can both be suitable. The doctor should assess you first, and a patch test is sensible.

If you have brown or dark skin: Nd:YAG is usually the safest choice. A diode can also be suitable in some cases. Alexandrite needs much more caution.

If your hair is blond, red, grey or white: no laser works well, because there is too little pigment to target. A good clinic should tell you this rather than sell you sessions.

What NeoDerma uses, and why

We want to be transparent: NeoDerma does not have a diode laser. We use:

  • Candela GentleLase Pro, a 755 nm Alexandrite laser with Candela's Dynamic Cooling Device, for light to medium skin, including fine and lighter-brown hair.
  • Deka Again, which combines Alexandrite with Nd:YAG, so darker skin tones can be treated with the Nd:YAG wavelength.

Having both wavelengths lets the doctor match the laser to your skin and hair at your assessment, rather than fitting everyone to one machine.

Questions to ask any clinic before laser hair removal

  1. Which laser and which wavelength will you use on me, and why for my skin type?
  2. Is the machine an original device from the manufacturer?
  3. Who assesses my skin before the first session, and is a patch test done?
  4. How many sessions do you expect for my area, and how far apart?
  5. What happens if my skin reacts?

Frequently asked questions

Is Candela better than diode?

Not for everyone. Candela's Alexandrite laser is usually very effective on light to medium skin and finer hair; diode lasers usually suit a wider range of skin tones. The right choice depends on your skin and hair.

Which laser is best for dark skin?

Nd:YAG is usually the safest choice for brown and dark skin. Some diode lasers are also suitable. Alexandrite needs extra caution on dark skin.

Which laser is less painful?

Comfort depends more on the cooling system, settings and area than on the laser type. Many people find both Alexandrite with cryogen cooling and diode with contact cooling tolerable.

Do I need fewer sessions with Candela?

Session numbers depend mostly on your hair, skin, hormones and the area. See our guide How many laser hair removal sessions do you need?.

Does NeoDerma have a diode laser?

No. NeoDerma uses the Candela GentleLase Pro (Alexandrite) and the Deka Again (Alexandrite plus Nd:YAG).
