How many laser hair removal sessions do you need?
Most people usually need around 6 to 8 sessions for a strong, long-lasting reduction on the body, and often more for the face. But the right number for you depends on the area, your hair, your skin and your hormones. This guide explains the typical numbers by area, how far apart sessions should be, and why some people need more.
Why one session is never enough
Hair grows in cycles. At any moment, only part of your hair is in the active growth phase (anagen), when the hair is still attached to the root and has the most pigment. Laser works best on these hairs. Hairs that are resting or shedding at the time of the session are not damaged as effectively, so they come back.
Each session treats the hairs that happen to be growing at that time. Spacing sessions weeks apart lets the next group of hairs enter the growth phase, so over a course of sessions, most follicles are treated.
Typical sessions by body area
These are usual ranges for a full course. Your own plan may be shorter or longer.
| Area | Usual number of sessions | Usual interval |
|---|---|---|
| Upper lip, chin, face (women) | 8 to 10, then maintenance | 4 to 6 weeks |
| Underarms | 6 to 8 | 4 to 8 weeks |
| Arms | 6 to 8 | 6 to 8 weeks |
| Bikini line / full bikini | 7 to 10 | 6 to 8 weeks |
| Legs (half or full) | 6 to 8 | 8 to 10 weeks |
| Back and shoulders (men) | 8 to 10 or more | 6 to 8 weeks |
| Chest and abdomen (men) | 8 to 10 | 6 to 8 weeks |
| Beard line and neck (men) | 10 or more | 4 to 6 weeks |
Body areas usually need fewer sessions than the face because body hair is less driven by hormones and grows more slowly, which is also why the intervals between body sessions are longer.
What changes the number of sessions
Hair colour and thickness. Dark, coarse hair absorbs laser energy best and usually clears fastest. Fine and lighter hair usually needs more sessions. Blond, red, grey and white hair usually responds poorly to any laser.
Skin tone. Darker skin needs more conservative settings to stay safe, which can mean more sessions. The right wavelength helps: at NeoDerma, darker skin is usually treated with the Nd:YAG wavelength on the Deka Again.
Hormones. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), some medicines and hormonal changes can stimulate new hair growth, especially on the face, chin and neck. People with hormonal hair growth usually need more sessions and regular maintenance. Treating the hormonal cause with your doctor helps.
The area. Face and neck hair is the most hormonally active. Legs and underarms usually respond more predictably.
The laser and settings. A laser matched to your skin and hair, used at effective settings by a trained team, makes a real difference. See Candela vs diode laser.
Keeping to the schedule. Going too early wastes a session on hairs that are not ready; leaving it too long lets the hair cycle move on. Sticking to your plan usually gives the best result in the fewest sessions.
What you do between sessions. Waxing, threading and plucking pull out the root the laser needs. Shave only between sessions.
What progress usually looks like
- After sessions 1 to 2: treated hairs shed over 1 to 3 weeks. Regrowth may look patchy as different hairs are at different stages.
- After sessions 3 to 4: hair usually grows back slower, finer and lighter, and shaving becomes much less frequent.
- After a full course: most people have a large, long-term reduction. A few fine or scattered hairs may remain.
Laser hair removal gives long-term hair reduction, not a promise that every hair is gone forever.
Maintenance sessions
Even after a full course, some follicles can become active again over time, especially with hormonal changes. Many people usually need a maintenance session once or twice a year, more often for the face.
How to get the most from each session
- Shave the area 12 to 24 hours before your session.
- Avoid sun, tanning and self-tan for about two weeks before and after.
- Do not wax, thread or pluck between sessions.
- Tell the team about any new medicines or hormonal changes.
- Book your next session before you leave so you stay on schedule.
Frequently asked questions
How many laser sessions do I need for my face?
Usually around 8 to 10, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, followed by maintenance, because facial hair is strongly affected by hormones.
How many sessions for underarms?
Usually around 6 to 8, spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart.
How long should I wait between sessions?
It varies by area: usually 4 to 6 weeks for the face and 6 to 10 weeks for the body. Your doctor will set the interval.
Why do I still have hair after 6 sessions?
Hormones, fine or light hair, darker skin needing gentler settings, waxing between sessions, or missed sessions can all slow progress. A review with the doctor can adjust the plan.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
It gives long-term reduction. Most treated follicles stop producing hair, and occasional maintenance sessions are normal.
Do men need more sessions?
Often yes for the beard line, back and chest, because male hair in these areas is usually dense and hormone-driven.
