How laser hair removal works

Laser hair removal uses a beam of light that is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair. That light turns into heat inside the follicle and damages its ability to grow a new hair, while the surrounding skin is protected.

Hair grows in cycles, and the laser only works well on hairs that are in their active growth phase at the time of the session. That is why one session is never enough: a course of sessions, spaced weeks apart, catches each follicle when it is ready to be treated. Over the course, hair becomes finer, lighter and much less dense. Most people describe the end result as a long-term reduction rather than a guarantee that every hair is gone forever, and occasional maintenance sessions are normal.

The technology: Candela GentleLase Pro

NeoDerma uses the Candela GentleLase Pro, a 755 nm Alexandrite laser. Alexandrite wavelength is strongly absorbed by hair pigment, which makes it efficient on dark hair, and its large spot sizes let the team cover areas like legs and backs quickly.

The GentleLase Pro has Candela's Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD), which sprays a short burst of cryogen onto the skin a fraction of a second before each laser pulse. This cools the surface, helps protect the skin and makes the session more comfortable.

Every laser has its ideal patients. Alexandrite works best on light to medium skin tones with dark hair. For darker skin tones, NeoDerma also has the Deka Again, a platform that combines Alexandrite with Nd:YAG. The Nd:YAG wavelength passes the skin's surface pigment more safely, so it is usually the preferred choice for olive, brown and darker skin. The doctor chooses the laser at your assessment.

Who is a good candidate?

Laser hair removal suits men and women who want to reduce unwanted hair on the face or body. It is often a good fit if you:

  • Have dark hair, since the laser targets hair pigment.
  • Get ingrown hairs, razor bumps or irritation from shaving and waxing.
  • Want to stop the routine of weekly hair removal.

It works poorly or not at all on white, grey, red or very light blond hair, because there is little pigment for the laser to target. The doctor will tell you honestly at assessment if laser is unlikely to help you.

Laser is usually postponed if you are pregnant, have a fresh tan or sunburn, have an active skin infection in the area, or are taking medicines that make the skin sensitive to light. Tell the team about any medicines, recent isotretinoin (Roaccutane) use, or hormonal conditions such as PCOS, which can affect how hair responds.

Treatment areas

NeoDerma treats all body areas. Common areas for women include the upper lip, chin, face, underarms, arms, legs, bikini line and full body. Common areas for men include the beard line and neck, back, shoulders and chest.

Your first visit

  1. Assessment. A doctor reviews your skin tone, hair colour and thickness, the areas you want treated, any previous laser history and your medical background.
  2. Patch test where needed. A small test area may be treated to check how your skin responds before a full session.
  3. Your plan. You get a clear plan: areas, expected number of sessions and spacing, so you know what to expect before you commit.

On the day of your session

  • Shave the area 12 to 24 hours before. Do not wax, pluck or thread, because the laser needs the hair root in place.
  • Arrive with clean skin, without creams, deodorant or makeup on the treated area.
  • The team will protect your eyes and calibrate the settings. Most people describe the feeling as a quick snap, like a rubber band, softened by the cooling spray.
  • Session length depends on the area. As a rough guide, the upper lip usually takes 5 to 10 minutes, underarms 10 to 15 minutes, full legs 45 to 60 minutes, and full body longer.

How many sessions will you need?

Many people usually need around 6 to 8 sessions to see a strong, lasting reduction, but the right number depends on the area, hair type, skin tone and hormones. Facial hair and hormonally driven hair often need more sessions and periodic top-ups. Sessions are usually spaced about 4 to 8 weeks apart, depending on how fast hair regrows in that area. Your doctor will set your spacing at assessment.

Usual ranges, which vary by area and hair type:

  • Underarms, arms and legs: usually 6 to 8 sessions.
  • Bikini line: usually 7 to 10 sessions.
  • Upper lip, chin and face: usually 8 to 10 sessions, then maintenance.
  • Back, chest and shoulders (men): usually 8 to 10 sessions or more.

Aftercare

  • Mild redness and small bumps around the follicles are common and usually settle within hours to a day or two.
  • Avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms and intense exercise for 24 to 48 hours.
  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed areas and avoid direct sun and tanning. This matters in Cairo sun.
  • Between sessions, shave only. Do not wax or pluck.
  • Treated hairs may appear to grow for one to two weeks before they shed. This is normal.

Contact the clinic if you notice blistering, crusting or anything that worries you.

Frequently asked questions

Is laser hair removal permanent?

It gives a long-term reduction in hair. Most treated follicles stop producing hair, and the hair that remains is usually finer and lighter. Some people need occasional maintenance sessions, especially for hormonally driven areas like the face.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Most people feel a quick snapping sensation. The GentleLase Pro's cooling spray before each pulse makes it more comfortable. Sensitive areas such as the bikini line can feel stronger.

How many sessions do I need?

Many people need around 6 to 8, spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart. Your doctor will give you a personal plan after assessing your hair, skin and treatment area.

Is it suitable for dark skin?

Alexandrite lasers work best on light to medium skin. For darker skin tones, NeoDerma usually uses the Nd:YAG wavelength on the Deka Again, which is safer for brown and darker skin. The doctor confirms the right laser at assessment.

Can men have laser hair removal?

Yes. NeoDerma treats men for areas such as the back, chest, shoulders, neck and beard line.

Can I have laser while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Laser hair removal is usually postponed during pregnancy as a precaution. Discuss breastfeeding with the doctor at your assessment.

How much does laser hair removal cost in New Cairo?
